Mindfulness and Mind-Body Exercise

Have you ever wondered what makes you happy? Maybe it’s a factor of where you are or who you’re with, but now, there’s a way to better understand the secret to your personal bliss through both mindfulness and mind-body exercise.


The great folks at TrackYourHappiness.org are holding a worldwide experiment, which you can take part in right now! Matt Killingsworth, the mastermind behind this great project, held a TED Talk discussing the causes and effects of happiness, emphasizing the importance of mindfulness and mind-body exercises in understanding our well-being. In addition to contributing to the greater good of understanding happiness, you’re able to learn a whole lot about yourself in the process. The minimal effort put forth can pay off in dividends by learning to pursue the activities that make you happy and possibly changing your perspective on life, integrating mindfulness and mind-body exercises into your daily routine.


It’s pretty simple, actually:


1. Sign Up for Mind-Body Exercise in Tracking Happiness

When signing up, you’ll answer a few questions for the sake of science. Within 10 minutes, you’ll share some simple information for statistical purposes (age, sex, etc.) while setting up your preferences for the experiment.

2. Track Your Happiness Periodically

Each day for approximately two weeks (or however long you decide), you’ll receive requests at sporadic points during the day to track your happiness. They ask that you complete the short questionnaire as soon as possible to capture your happiness at that very moment. For example, they may ask, “How do you feel?”, “What are you doing?” or “What are you thinking about?”.


3. Your Happiness Report

After 50 reports, you receive your personal happiness report. It’s amazing. It graphs all your responses and provides insight into what makes you happy, and what doesn’t.


4. Future Happiness

And if you’re willing and still interested to understand your happiness, they will send you a message to track your happiness again in approximately 6 months. After all, your happiness can change from time to time, so it’s a great learning process that leverages mindfulness and mind-body exercises for long-term well-being.


I’ve found this process both interesting and enlightening. As I learn more about myself, I am able to make better decisions that align with my core values and incorporate mindfulness and mind-body exercises more effectively.
