The summer parties and BBQs have officially ended. Change is in the air. How are you feeling? Are you anxious about your next steps? It might be time to consider Ayurveda and stress management techniques to help you stress less. Hang in there; it's a beautiful time to turn over a new (and autumnal) leaf.
A few years ago, we ran a social media effort around Labor Day Resolutions. If you’ve never heard of it, don’t fret. I made it up. As the summer winds down, I like to consider what I can do to jump back into my routine with more productivity and less stress. No New Years Resolutions pressure here; the fall is an opportunity to embrace change while finding new ways to destress, especially through Ayurveda and stress management practices.
Below are 4 easy ideas that can make a significant difference in your routine to calm and peace, especially when you feel like today's work environment is testing your limits.
Commit to Regularly Scheduled Workouts Many of us can commit to one or two workouts per week. What if we challenged ourselves to hit the American Heart Association’s recommendation of at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 days per week? By committing to a few additional morning workouts, you can quickly get yourself to a healthier place, both physically and mentally. Working out not only helps you feel great about your body but it also induces anxiety and stress relief. It can be difficult to wake up early every morning but consider starting with once or twice a week. If you can’t get to the gym, there are many exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home. You may love building a routine that promotes such stress relief and find yourself adding on more early days.
Incorporate one vegetarian day in your meat-filled week Eating vegetarian once a week not only benefits your body but also the world around you. Per Meatless Monday, “going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. And going meatless once a week can also help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water.” This practice is in line with Ayurveda's emphasis on a balanced diet for managing stress.
Sleep at least 7 hours each night This one might be the most difficult. We all work overtime and have personal commitments that we don’t want to miss. Unfortunately, that means sleep may be sacrificed and along with it, time to destress. Sleep is critical. Under 6 hours of snooze time affects your mood, attitude, and overall health. If possible, try to get into a routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time each day. This adjustment to your routine will give you the extra shut-eye you need and give you the mental space to learn how to stress less with Ayurveda and stress management techniques.
Add a new healthy habit Want to floss more? Looking to wake up a little earlier each morning? Tie those new habits to an already existing one. For example, if you want to floss more, do it immediately after you brush your teeth; otherwise, you might forget. In this instance, consider posting a note on your bathroom mirror to help you remember. Building healthier habits will allow you to feel good about yourself. Additionally, a steady routine helps you unwind after a long day and destress, incorporating Ayurveda and stress management into your daily life.
