5 Ways Strong Women Boost Their Short-Term Confidence

Updated: Jan 9

How women leaders boost their confidence

Confidence is a crucial attribute for any leader, and strong women are no exception. Close to 100% of clients come to me feeling a dip in confidence, even if they've created powerful careers and beautiful families. For some reason, even as things look externally successful, life no longer feels as stable as it once did, and they start to feel their inner confidence crumbling on the inside. One thing I know to be true, even the most powerful women leaders need a little boost to their self-assurance.

Even when we're at the top, we occasionally question our worthiness. "Do I deserve to be here?" Short answer: YES, even if it doesn't necessarily feel that way.

In this blog post, we will explore five effective techniques that can help you enhance your short-term confidence. These practices, including the Breath of Joy, mirror appreciation, self-massage, positive affirmations, and power posing, are designed to help you before that next big meeting.

Breath of Joy

The Breath of Joy is a simple yet invigorating exercise that can instantly uplift your spirits and energize your body. To perform this exercise, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. As you take a deep breath in, raise your arms in front of you up to shoulder level. Then, as you exhale, swing your arms open wide, simultaneously bending your knees slightly. Repeat this motion, inhaling as you raise your arms and exhaling as you swing them open. Start with five repetitions and gradually increase to ten if it feels comfortable. This exercise releases endorphins and promotes a positive mindset, instantly boosting your confidence. Here's a helpful video demonstrating "Breath of Joy" if you're like me and appreciate a visual.

Mirror Appreciation

Looking in the mirror and appreciating yourself is a powerful practice that can help you develop a positive self-image. Take a moment each day to gaze into the mirror, making eye contact with yourself. Identify one thing you appreciate about yourself, whether it's a physical attribute, a skill, or a personal quality. Say it out loud, affirming your positive self-perception. The act of acknowledging and appreciating your strengths fosters self-confidence and self-love.

Self-Massage/Abhyanga

Self-massage, particularly the Ayurvedic practice known as Abhyanga, is a wonderful way to reconnect with your body, promote relaxation, and boost your confidence. Before showering, warm some oil (such as coconut, sesame, or almond) and apply it to your body. Use long, sweeping strokes to massage the oil into your skin, paying attention to areas that carry tension, like your shoulders, neck, and back. As you perform this soothing ritual, allow yourself to relax and let go of any negative thoughts. The nurturing touch and self-care involved in self-massage can enhance your confidence and well-being.

Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are powerful tools that can rewire your mindset and build self-confidence. Create a list of three positive affirmations that resonate with you personally. Examples could include statements like, "I am strong," "I am smart," or "I always get it done." Repeat these affirmations to yourself regularly, either silently or out loud. By consciously replacing negative self-talk with positive statements, you cultivate a mindset that reinforces your confidence and empowers you to overcome challenges.

Power Pose

The concept of power posing, popularized by social psychologist Amy Cuddy, suggests that adopting expansive and confident body postures can positively influence your mindset. Find a private space where you can stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart, chest lifted, and arms either on your hips or raised triumphantly overhead. Hold this pose for a few minutes, breathing deeply and embodying confidence. The physicality of the power pose can create a sense of strength and self-assurance, boosting your confidence before important events or challenging situations.

As a strong woman leader, nurturing your confidence is essential for success. These five techniques—the Breath of Joy, mirror appreciation, self-massage/Abhyanga, positive affirmations, and power posing—offer powerful ways to boost your short-term confidence. By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can cultivate a strong and resilient mindset that empowers you to lead with confidence, grace, and authenticity. Embrace these techniques, and watch your confidence soar to new heights. You've got this!
